2024-2025 Red Wings Season Prediction
I’ll keep this one short and sweet as I’m writing it from my phone from the terrific Dessert Oasis coffee shop, just a couple blocks from where the Wings will open their season against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Every year I release my prediction for the Wings point total along with some accompanying thoughts. I’ve done reasonably well the last couple years:
23-24: Predicted 87, Actual 91
22-23: Predicted 81, Actual 80
Ahead of the Wings opener, here’s my season prediction:
- 86 points
- 7th in the Atlantic
Things that could radically alter this:
- Can the Wings shoot 10% at 5v5 again this year (2nd in the league) without generating higher quality chances (28th in xGF/60)
- Can the Wings continue to get timely goaltending on the PK (88% PK SV%, 4th in the league) without improving their PK defense (31st in SH xGA/60)
- Can they start faster instead of relying on come-from-behind wins as they did often last year (4th best win% when trailing after 2 periods)
- Will they continue to draw penalties at an efficient rate (2nd best penalty differential in the league)
There’s a lot of questions for the team to answer to see if they can sustain and even build upon what they achieved last year. Some of these may be addressed by growth from guys like Edvinsson, Raymond, and Seider. That’s the fun part for us to sit back and watch!
I’m excited for the season to finally be here and I look forward to seeing folks at the opener tonight and the red carpet/Game 2 on Saturday. If you see me, please feel free to stop me to say hey and chat
