After his hot start that saw him score nine goals in his first seven games, Alex DeBrincat has found the back of the net just eight times in the last 39 games. A career 14.4% shooter coming into the season, DeBrincat has scored just six times on his last 82 shots on goal (7.3%). Given this, I wanted to visualize DeBrincat’s “streakiness” over his career.
In the graphic above, each box represents a shot on goal. Red boxes are goals and white boxes are saved shots on goal. From the graphic, we can see that the red boxes are often “clustered”, suggesting that when DeBrincat gets hot, he’ll find the back of the net multiple times in a short period of time.
Nothing else has changed for DeBrincat during this slump. In these past 39 games he’s averaging (data via Evolving-Hockey):
2.82 shots on goal (career average: 2.88)
1.08 expected goals per 60 minutes (career average: 1.07)
Average goal probability per unblocked shot of 7.94% (career average: 8.5%)
DeBrincat’s scored eight goals on his last 100 shots on goal, his worst scoring slump in nearly 200 games. He ended up breaking out of that slump by scoring five goals on his next 18 shots. I don’t expect DeBrincat’s scoring woes to continue for long and look for him to score in bunches once he snaps out.

Prashanth I know this is off topic but, with Mckenzie’s prospect list dropping yesterday, can you give your opinion on whom the Wings should be looking at and/or whom you think they’ll be targeting assuming a draft slot 13-18??? Appreciate you man. Cheers.
