The recent Wings had a lot of give-up shifts, where they spend 60 seconds stuck in their zone before dumping the puck at center ice and going for a change. This year, that seems to be a little better, which would account for fewer dump-ins without requiring a change of style.

However, if that's true, they should be better at recovering dump-ins, since more of them are attempts to maintain possession.

I'm not surprised dump-ins are on the rise - it seems like 2024 hockey has settled on "if you are in any doubt, rim it hard behind the net" as the best strategy.

A big factor in the Wings low recovery rate on dump ins, I think, is the amount of extended shifts in their own end. Once they finally clear the zone they need a complete change, so there is no one to try to retrieve the puck.

Question: The correlation between dump in rate and recovery rate seems to have disappeared. Does that make any sense? One would think that teams that are worse at recovering their dump-ins would dump the puck in less. At least in the beginning of the season, that seems not to be the case.

Also, why would teams be concerned with copying the Florida Panthers? This doesn't make any sense to me. The NHL is copycat league and I get that, but for all but about the eight top teams in the NHL, should they not be focused on maximising their regular season success? If you're a team like Detroit or like Ottawa or like Buffalo, copying the Florida Panthers should be the least of your worries. You should attempt to copy the best regular season teams. I'm not saying the Panthers were bad last regular season, but they were not the best, and a team like Detroit really ought to be hyper-focused on the regular season.

We can worry about the playoffs once we get there. Why worry about the playoffs when there's no chance of getting there anyway? I think about 24 of the NHL's 32 teams pay way too much attention to what happens in playoff games and not enough to what happens in the regular season games, because for these 24 (maybe closer to 20), their fate will be decided by how they play in regular season games.

Is that dump in data above for all situations or even strength?
